It’s always good to see my name in print

Friday, November 16th, 2007

Home Media Magazine1Being a member of the new media, I usually give members of old media a hard time. Mostly it’s because they don’t know how to leverage their content online to make information more available while at the same time making them more money. But that aside, I still like to see my name in print — even when they get they get my title wrong.

In this week’s edition of Home Media Magazine, I’m quoted in the piece about format war fanboys. Personally, I think they’re hilarious, but others take them very seriously. Either way I appreciate being included.

There’s always enough time

Friday, October 26th, 2007

We hear all to often that there isn’t enough time in the day, but is it really true? I don’t know about anyone else, but I always seem to find the time to do what I really want to do. In fact if I tell you I don’t have time, it usually probably means I don’t want to find the time or that I can think of 10 other things I need to do, that I’d rather do. I think everyone is like this, we all find time to do the things we want. Sure there isn’t enough time in the day to do everything, but as long as there is enough time to do what you really want to do, then does it really matter?

With understanding, comes acceptance

Friday, October 19th, 2007

This is one of the core philosophies of life, and a big reason why I am so dedicated to learning so many different topics.  There are many things in life that I don’t have any control over and that I’m asked to blindly accept. I’ve always found it easier to accept things if I understand them, and so I go on quests for knowledge. But many times there are things that go unanswered and this is something I find very difficult to accept. Why would a parent say “because I said so”, maybe it’s because they don’t know or don’t care enough to explain why.

Regardless, it is what it is, and I just hope everyone learns: that with understanding, comes acceptance — for me at least.

Never knew how good I had it

Thursday, October 18th, 2007

I’ve been fascinated with a few different technologies, and while HDTV is my current hobby, my first was car audio. The little town where I grew up didn’t have a car audio shop of any kind, so we would drive over to West Palm Beach, FL to a little place called Audio Advisors. They had the most high end gear around and the best employees. Their installation team was award winning and I learned a lot from my long talks their sales people. To me it was just my closest audio shop, but here it is now fifteen years later and they are still being recognized for their excellence. Although I couldn’t care much less about car audio now, I’m sure they are up on the latest home automation and theater gear and I’m sure I could still learn quite a few things from them.

Ch10_HD.png

My friend Bryan Schneider from TampaHDTV.com knows someone from just about every local TV channel in the Tampa Bay area, so when they asked him to help out with a segment about HDTV, he asked me to help ’em out. Unfortunately for Bryan, although he helped them, they didn’t use any of his quotes. They did used plenty of mine though, and I was very pleased with the quotes that they choose to use and think they did a very good job of educating the public.

If you’re in the Tampa Bay area you can catch in to channel 10 news, otherwise you can click the image and watch it on their website, or you can just read the transcript here.

Thanks Bryan!

Finally bought a new HDTV

Wow, its been a full month since I’ve posted, I have no excuse, just been lazy. I’m pretty excited to write up this one ’cause I haven’t bought a new HDTV in a long long time. I bought my first HDTV in the summer of 2003 and have owned a total of three HDTVs. It’s very hard for me not to buy a new one every year, but luckily I have enough other desires to keep me busy. At CES 07, the second I saw the Pioneer 8th generation plasma demo, I knew that was going to change. I just couldn’t get over how big of a step these new TVs were compared to anything I’d ever seen before. I had to wait almost 9 months to get one in my house, but on Friday I received my new 60″ 1080p PDP-6010FD Plasma from Plasma concepts. After some debate I ended up with a nice wall mount and a new piece of furniture to put my center channel on. Eventually there will be a full review on EngadgetHD, but for now, all I can say is WOW! This thing is really a sight to see and if you haven’t seen one yet, you have to make it to your local retailer and you’ll understand why the new Kuro line is the new standard in HDTVs.

Check out all the pics.

If you decide to buy one too, hook me up and buy the Pioneer KURO PDP-6010FD 60″ 1080p Plasma HDTV from Amazon.

Newsgator.com optimized for the iPhone

Tuesday, July 24th, 2007

Shortly after I fell in love with NetworkNewsWire, I learned to love Newsgator for no other reason than so I don’t have to read the same news twice. The biggest thing I had to give up when I got my iPhone was Newsgator Go! I have been using the mobile version of Newsgator.com on my iPhone and while it’s ok, anyone who has used it knows it doesn’t work that great on the iPhone. Now Newsgator has released a iPhone optimized version and I have to say they’ve done a great job. It’s really nice! Now if I could just get an equivalent to Google’s mail application, all would be right with the iPhone.

Finally: FIOS in Riverside Hieghts

FIOS available

Way back at the end of 2006, I noticed that a crew was laying fiber optic cable in my neighborhood and got excited. Seven months later and still no fiber, but the day has finally come. Almost 8 months since they started and four months after the crews left our hood, and it is finally available. Not sure what took so long, but we’ll see how the install goes this Saturday. I’m looking forward to nine more HD channels and doubt I’ll miss MOJO or Versus/Golf HD (which I really don’t get anyways).

iPhone and Gmail work around

Friday, July 6th, 2007

Two of my favorite things work terrible together. Gmail is the best web mail application, I can’t imagine email without it, but the lack of IMAP is a real bummer.

POP has always sucked when used to keep up with your mail in more than one place, and Gmail manages to make it worse by; not giving you enough control over what gets POP’d, not marking items as read when POP’d, and putting sent items in your inbox. So until Apple and Google get together to make a Google mail equivalent to Goog’s Java app, here is the work around I use.

First you need a good IMAP service provider, since just about everyone has an AIM account, just login to mail.aol.com and configure your mail. Then go to Gmail and create a filter that will forward just the mail you want to receive on your iPhone, to your AOL email address. Now from either Mail.app or directly from the iPhone, configure a new email account. Call it GMail and configure it just like Google instructs, but instead of using their POP server, use AOL’s IMAP (imap.aol.com) server (be sure to use Gmail’s SMTP server though). If you set it up in Mail.app and sync over, you’ll have to edit the SMTP settings on the iPhone manually, cause the settings don’t sync over correctly — it should be obvious what the problem is, just don’t forget the special port number.

The only down side of this method is that you have to mark any email that makes it to your iPhone as read twice. But the good part is that you can send messages from your iPhone that not only appear to come from your Gmail account, but they also show up on gmail.com as if you’d sent them from the website.

If you’re wondering why I just didn’t use Yahoo’s IMAP service, it’s cause the iPhone won’t let you configure a different SMTP server on an Yahoo account or a different from address. I thought about configuring the account manually, but I couldn’t figure out the settings. I even tried to sniff my iPhone’s traffic while it retrieved my Yahoo mail, I figured out the IMAP server IP, but I was not able to figure out the user name or the password since they were encrypted (I tried the ID and password I use to sign on to yahoo.com, no dice). If you know how to brute-force this let me know, I still have the TCP stream.

**Update** Yeah, Gmail adds IMAP support, so no more work arounds! But you can still use this if you want to make gmail push mail via Mobile Me.
