When I realized how much money I was wasting on pay TV, I decided to cancel FiOS after football season and go all OTA and Blu-ray via Netflix. And although I plan to add it back when football season comes around again, because technology changes so fast I’m going to go ahead and sell the tuners now and just buy ’em again when needed — assuming something better doesn’t come out by then.
So I have two like-new ATI Digital Cable Tuners that I’d like $200 for, each. I was just going to put them on eBay but figured someone I know might want them and prefer to buy them from someone they know. I have all the original accessories and box which I will of course include. It goes without saying that these will only work with an OEM Digital Cable Ready PC, but if you want to figure out how to hack the firmware, I’ll let you try the product key that came with my XPS 420 (not for sale).
UPDATE, I sold both of these already.
are you going OTA or clear qam? Are you keeping fios for internet? Just curious. I pay 42 for fios tv. Bundling drives the price even cheaper though.
You are right in the sense that I too only watch sports on cable.
I’m going OTA, and just keeping FiOS for Internet. I may or may not keep the 20/5 package, depending on the price.
Even at $42 it is too much as I just don’t watch it enough. Especially when you consider all the good stuff on cable gets released on Blu-ray within a few months.
OTA, baby! Oh I’m so tempted… OTA + Netflix. I just don’t think I can wean Melissa of her CNN addiction. And we’re still on special with Comcast for a few more months: digital cable (including three CableCARDs) and broadband for just $60/mo. We’ll reevalaute when that deal expires.
Hi Ben
I have been reading your blog for a while and enjoy it. so your making the BIG switch dont you have any little ones I too would cut Fios but my 3 kids would hang me they wawhen we went from directv to TWC and now to Fios the very happy watching all there cartoons netflixs won’t replace disney channel? will it?
It must be something going around… I pretty much did the same thing recently.
I returned the set top boxes and killed the cable tv service. Between the digital service, the hd “tier” that made it worth while, the box fees and the remote fees…. ridiculous! And it was still crappy TWC service!!!
And now that ATT has a clue reguarding naked DSL, excellent quality OTA hd, and with Netflix, not to mention so much free content streaming online at nearly the quality I was paying TWC for, there is no reason to stick with cable.
That and the fact that the $840/yr I save can buy a lot of sd/hd content, I honestly don’t think I’ll be missing anything… I don’t have the time to watch what I have, anyways!
Dale,
Actually Netflix will replace disney, you wouldn’t believe how much kids content is on Netflix watch now.
Besides, I only let my kids watch an hour of TV a day and between sesame street and barney, there isn’t much time left.
FrankIn,
You pretty much nailed it. There isn’t enough time in the day to watch all the HD content and when you look at how much you can get from Netflix vs traditional cable and then the price it is a no brainer.
Going to cancel my cable tomorrow. I’ll let you know how it goes for me.
